Are influencers a positive force in Romanian media or a toxic replacement for journalism?
Romanian influencers now command larger audiences than many traditional media outlets. They shape opinions on everything from politics to lifestyle. Are they helping or hurting?
FOR
Influencers have democratized media in Romania. Traditional Romanian media is controlled by a handful of moguls with political agendas. Influencers broke this monopoly, creating independent voices that answer to their audience, not to owners with hidden interests.
Influencers like Selly, BRomania, and countless niche creators provide authentic perspectives that resonate with younger Romanians. They cover topics traditional media ignores — mental health, startup culture, LGBTQ+ issues, financial literacy.
They've also created a new creative economy. Thousands of young Romanians now earn a living through content creation, building skills in video production, marketing, and storytelling. This is innovation and entrepreneurship in action.

AGAINST
Romanian influencers are a cancer on public discourse. Most have zero journalistic training, no editorial standards, and no accountability. They spread misinformation without consequences while actual journalists face lawsuits and threats for reporting truth.
The influencer economy is built on deception. Undisclosed sponsorships, fake engagement numbers, and manufactured lifestyles create unrealistic expectations. Young Romanians see curated fantasy lives and develop anxiety, depression, and materialism.
Worse, influencers are replacing informed analysis with hot takes. Complex issues like EU policy, judicial reform, or economic strategy get reduced to 60-second TikToks. We're breeding a generation that confuses entertainment with information and popularity with expertise.

Traditional Romanian media is so corrupt that influencers are literally the only independent voices left.

Some influencers are great, some are terrible. Same as journalists. We need regulation and transparency, not blanket judgments.

I worked with 3 Romanian influencers and all had fake followers. The entire industry is built on fraud.

My niece thinks she does not need university because she wants to be an influencer. This is the damage being done.
