Romania should legalize recreational cannabis. Prohibition has failed — cannabis use exists regardless of laws, but criminalization pushes it underground where there's no quality control, no age verification, and profits go to organized crime. Legalization would generate massive tax revenue. Colorado (USA) has earned over 2 billion USD in cannabis taxes since 2014. Romania could use this funding for healthcare, education, and drug prevention programs. Portugal decriminalized all drugs in 2001 and saw drug-related deaths, HIV infections, and drug use among youth all decrease. Treating cannabis as a health issue rather than a criminal one saves lives and taxpayer money. Romanian prisons are already overcrowded — we don't need to fill them with cannabis users.

Legalizing cannabis in Romania would be reckless. Romanian society already has serious issues with alcohol abuse — adding another legal intoxicant would compound the problem. Our healthcare system is underfunded and unprepared for increased substance abuse cases. The 'gateway drug' concern is real in the Romanian context. In a country where many young people already struggle with limited opportunities, easier access to cannabis would further reduce motivation and productivity. Youth unemployment is already too high. Romania's institutions are too weak to properly regulate a cannabis market. Look at how poorly we regulate tobacco and alcohol — illegal cigarette sales thrive, and underage drinking is rampant. Legalization would create a chaotic market that organized crime would still dominate, just with a legal veneer.
